Mighty Big Boots To Fill
by allancarreon on Jul.24, 2017, under Music & Theater, Queer
2005’s Kinky Boots is one of my favorite LGBT-themed films ever. Heck, it’s one of my favorite films, period. It’s funny, touching, and uplifting all at once. This was a time before Joel Edgerton ever became Ramses and Chiwetel Ejiofor ever became Baron Mordo. The film itself is something I can watch over and over without getting tired of it.
So obviously, Kinky Boots the Musical has absolutely big shoes (boots?) to fill in my eyes. True, it won Tonys, Oliviers, a Grammy, and more. Plus, hello, Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein, duh. I have not seen it on Broadway – it’s on my bucket list – but I managed to catch the matinee of the Manila production last Saturday afternoon with my friend AJ.
The verdict?
Big shoes absolutely filled fantastically!
And such a perfect analogy, to boot (heh).
In The End

Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, like the rest of his band, will always be icons of rock. Fronting a band that has survived – and succeeded – across two decades of the changing face of rock is no small feat, and the talent involved is enormous as the discography proves.
A couple of days ago, Chester passed on into truly legendary status.
Rest in peace, sir.
In the end, you still did matter.

The Bellas are back, and this one looks like it would be better than the so-so last and closer to the awesome first one. I’m down with it.
No Man Does It All By Himself

At first, I thought I’d hate it. But as Boy George continued singing it, I realized how beautiful and lovely this is. And it gives a new light to what the Village People were talking about. Absolutely enthralling.
Work It If You Got The Nerve

The Scissor Sisters are back, and with MNDR, they’ve got a fabulous new song – and if you’ve got even a teeny tiny gay bone in your body, you won’t be able to resist learning how to freaking do the goddamn SWERLK. Fortunately, choreographer Brad Landers has given us a dazzling tutorial, and excuse me while I lock myself up in my room until this Saturday’s Metro Manila Pride March to prep for it with this routine.
The track is now available on iTunes. Swerk it, get it, gurrrl.
Shady Ladies

Recently, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry made headlines again because of their ongoing feud. It also highlighted just how petty and juvenile Taylor is, not to mention absolutely fake vis-a-vis her purported stance on streaming sites. Of course, this guy pretty much summed it all up for the rest of us commoners who are sane.
The Week According To Madonna

The feels! Oh, lawdy, the feels. Sam Kalidi posted this some time back, and he knows the profound truth in this.
Happy week ahead, guys! Is it Friday yet? (Well, Thursday, at least: Wonder Woman is coming!)
Princess of Pop

“I am not a traditional gay icon. There’s been no tragedy in my life, only tragic outfits.”
– Kylie Minogue
Taking a quick break from Wonder Week, I just had to give space here to celebrate the birthday of the one and only Kylie Minogue, princess of pop!
The fact is, only Kylie can truly claim to be the heir to Madonna’s throne. Her long and ubiquitous career spanning almost over three decades shows just how versatile and amazing the woman is. She has faced personal difficulties, survived breast cancer, experimented in her music (I cannot be the only one who loved Did It Again from her Impossible Princess phase), campaigned against child abuse, been a gay icon and LGBT supporter, and been an inspiration to women everywhere.
